Needs for Mental Health Services of a Low-income Urban Area

Abstract
Objectives: Since the available resources for public welfare is limited in Korea, correct understanding of people in community and needs for mental health is very important for effective community mental health service. This study was performed to define the community characteristics, awareness and needs for mental health in low-income urban area.

Methods: We send a questionnaire to the every 7278 house that is located within distance that can get to Daeduk community mental health center on foot. The questionnaire was modified one of Uiwang mental health center used for the evaluation of community mental health needs. We received 635 of reply by mail and analysed them.

Results: The subject area of our investigation had poor social security system and was in low socioeconomic level in many aspects like form of health security and income. So community residents recognized the urgency of mental health problem but they did not get adequate treatment and did not know about community mental health center where they could get appropriate services. They rated that the crisis intervention programs for the delinquency of the adolescent, dementia and alcohol related problem were most needed in the mental health services.

Conclusion: The development and carrying out of appropriate program of crisis intervention which can meet the needs for mental health services as well as informing the community residents about the roles of community mental health center are urgently needed.
